Though she completed only some six years of formal education, Ngarrindjeri spokeswoman Katinyeri (1935-2007) was recognized as a skilled historical researcher in her professional life. She began her formal genealogical work in 1979, at the U. of South Australia, where she assembled histories and genealogies and helped to reunite members of the Stolen Generation; established the Aboriginal Family History Unit at the South Australian Museum in the 1980s; was awarded an honorary doctorate by the U. of South Australia in 1995; and published several books on genealogy. Collaborating with cultural heritage consultant and oral historian Sue Anderson, Kartinyeri offers a memoir written in particular for her people. The text traces Kartinyeri's life from childhood through her adult work as an Aboriginal activist dedicated to achieving social justice for Aboriginals and Torres Strait Island peoples.
