Men are more than twice as likely to develop substance use disorders as women. This work gathers recent research on factors related to men and addiction, looking at issues such as men's attitudes toward alcohol and drugs, the social construction of masculinity, and assessment and treatment. Some topics considered include anabolic steroid abuse in bodybuilders, past sexual abuse in men with substance use problems, and the relationship between personality scales of impulsiveness and discounting of monetary gains and losses in smokers and never-smokers. Other subjects include cognitive dysfunction in cocaine abuse, controversies in the assessment and treatment of heroin addiction, gender differences in methamphetamine effects in animals and humans, and social norms and quid chewing in Taiwanese adolescents.
