Justice is divine by definition in Chinese legal culture. Katz (modern history, Academia Sinica, Taiwan) examines how religious belief in the inevitability of retribution serves as one of the key conceptual bases of the ideology of Chinese justice and the performance of judicial rituals such as oath-taking and chicken-beheading. He traces this relationship in ancient views of the Chinese underworld, colonial times, the postwar period, and modern Taiwan. Illustrations include a certificate of gratitude thanking a temple's deities for their help in resolving a case of investment fraud, and worshipers dressed as criminals in a ritual mimicking of legal practice to address concerns about previous wrongdoing or restore face.
