Kaufman (political science, Whittier College) and Williams (government and international relations, Clark University) look at the impact that recent conflicts have had on women, both physically and as to their place within a national identity. Before concentrating on three of the most troubled areas in the world, Ireland, Israel/Palestine and the Balkan states, the authors reflect on the history of women as citizens in the United States. In all cases they try to discover when and why women become political activists. One finding surprised them; in many cases, it is working class women who spearhead movements. They are the most directly affected by societal/domestic violence and have fewer options to escape. Therefore, they are most motivated to take matters into their own hands, often joining with women of the other side in the conflict to work for peace. Seen through the lens of "gendered nationalism" the authors demonstrate the greater toll war takes on women that transcends ethnic and religious differences.
