This edited collection contains seven plays: "The Workhouse Ward" by Lady Gregory (1908); "The King of Spain's Daughter," by Teresa Deevy (1935); "I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside," by Ann Le Marquand Hartiga (1984); "The Stranded Hours Between," by Dolores Walshe (1989); "Eclipsed," by Patricia Burke Brogan (1992); "Twinkletoes," by Jennifer Johnston (1993), and "Heritage," by Nicola McCartney (2001). In the Introduction, the editors summarize the history of Irish theater from the founding of the Irish Literary Theatre in 1899, listing and commenting on numerous plays by women playwrights. They discuss the status of Irish women and their suppression in a male-dominated political sphere during most of the 20th century, and that changes in society in the 1970s and 1980s came with a new and continuing growth in production and success of plays by women.
