The first edition was published in 1991 (Marshall Cavendish), with a supplement appearing in 1994--the whole set profiling 266 writers. This revised edition incorporates updates throughout, substantial revisions of about 100 entries, and 73 new authors, including Canadians (for the first time) and more women and minorities. The six volumes (each about 460 pages) profile 399 writers from the 17th century to the present whose works represent a wide variety of American experiences and voices and who are central to any study of American literature. In the esteemed tradition of Magill surveys, this set has been prepared according to strict style and format guidelines that include the following in each article: birth and death data; brief summary; biography; analysis of style, themes, and literary characteristics; separate sections on specific works, with data, analysis, and condensed description; summary; and (updated) bibliography. A photo is included with most entries. New to this edition are "Discussion Topics" sidebars useful for students, teachers, and reading group members. The writing is accessible, yet without condescension, making this reference appropriate for middle school and high school students as well as general readers.
