Greek tragedy reflected the society of the times. Kennedy (classics, Denison U., Granville, Ohio) contends that the theater of fifth century BCE Athens, even more than its courts and other democratic political institutions, gave the Athenian polity its unity because it was so intimately tied to its civic identity. For example, representations of a just Athena, the city's patron goddess, on stage in Sophocles' Ajax and Euripides' Ion served to reinforce their radical concept of justice as played out in myth and in reality. Tragedies such as Aeschylus' Eumenides and Oresteia also mirrored transformations of the Athenian sense of justice as they imposed democracy on allies in the Athenian Empire. The volume includes ancient art images. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
