In this study, Kerby-Fulton (English, U. of Notre Dame) examines textual suppression or acceptance of heresies in late medieval England beyond those related to the Lollard movement of John Wycliffe. She examines the treatment of the writings of five major vernacular writers--Langland, Chaucer, Julian, Porete, and Kempe--and attempts to excavate the relative degrees of constraint, censorship, or intellectual freedom that applied to their non-Lollardy heresies through textual and manuscript evidence such as authorial revision, scribal caveats, literary ambiguity, and even claims to divine inspiration.
