Revising her 2007 PhD dissertation at the University of Szeged, Hungary, Khabtagaeva explores the extent and nature of linguistic links between Mongolic languages and Tuvan, which has absorbed more influence from Mongolic than other archaic Turkic languages. Besides demonstrating the strong Mongolic influence on Tuvan, she strives to establish what criteria are available to characterize and classify the loan words, as a contribution to the larger field of Altaic studies. In order to determine the laws of adaption, she investigates whether a borrowed word preserves the shape in had in the source language, or changes to match the phonetic rules of Tuvan. The loan words can also help resolve some questions about Tuvan and Turkic languages in general, she says. Mongolian and Tuvan have separate indexes.
