This text by Kiely (DePaul U. College of Law's Center for Law and Science) examines US judicial responses to the use of forensic science in the criminal justice system, focusing on those cases questioning the legal acceptability forensic science methodologies under standards arising out of the cases of Frye v. United States and Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, as well as on those cases that accepted underlying methodologies by rejected investigative uses of particular forensic sciences. After opening chapters examining overarching questions of the relationship between forensic science and criminal justice law, the remaining material is organized according to types of scientific evidence, with nine chapters covering hair analyses; fiber analysis; ballistics and tool marks; soil, glass, and paint; footprints, tire impressions, and bite marks; fingerprints; blood-spatter analysis; DNA analysis; and forensic anthropology and entomology.
