Drawing on the variety of maritime experience in the region of the Baltic and the North Seas, this book questions to assertion that there was a common maritime culture on the shores of those northern seas. Commencing with the end of the Ice Age, this study covers the power struggles of the region from the early traders and raiders through the merchants, princes, and pirates of the Middle Ages to the era of the Great Power politics. Trade and fishing, ships and shipbuilding, navigation, gender roles, and land reclamation are all discussed. Kirby teaches Slavonic and East European studies at the University of London.
