Klemperer's life began as the son of a privileged, well connected Austrian/German family living in Berlin. His memoir of how it all came crashing down as a result of the rise of Hitler and the family's Jewish ancestry could have been like a thousand others. But Klemperer, who was sent to the United States in 1938 to attend Harvard, became a historian and now he looks back on his own life in the light of what came to be the topic he felt most obligated to study, the resistance to the Nazis within Germany. In a world that still sees the war years as either/or, Klemperer remembers friends who could love their country and hate its rulers and also some who were Nazi believers. The stories of the people he knew, many also from prestigious families, help to open the reader to the many shades of acceptance as well as attempts at revolt that occurred during the war. Klemperer relies on a trove of letters, documents and diaries to support his memories. His writing style is almost novelistic, vivid and emotional.
