National Galleries reveals the agency of national galleries in the production and consumption of art, aesthetics, taste, forms of representation and power. Itopens an institutional ‘black box’ revealing how these museums have, through repeated acts of invention, emulation and competition, permitted nations to deploy art in the modernisation of their identities and in doing so establish and convey the political significance of art objects. Simon Knell injects the perspectives of a museologist and cultural historian into the workings and influence of national galleries allowing museum and cultural studies students and scholars to enter this world on terms they understand. It also allows art historians to view their world through the paradigms of museology opening up new possibilities of study. Both readerships will be equipped to deconstruct and better understand the institutions in question and their performances. Using exemplars and overviews Knell permits audiences to view, but yet not be overwhelmed by, the complex agency of these institutions. He manages to engage with the rich history and contemporary practice and provide an accessible narrative that will pose new questions and avenues of research for both the art historian and museologist.
