National Galleries reveals the agency of national galleries in the production and consumption of art, aesthetics, taste, forms of representation and power. Simon Knell injects the perspectives of a museologist and cultural historian into the workings and influence of national galleries allowing museum and cultural studies students and scholars to enter this world on terms they understand. It also allows art historians to view their world through the paradigms of museology opening up new possibilities of study. Both readerships will be equipped to deconstruct and better understand the institutions in question and their performances.
