The physics of nanostructured materials such as atomic clusters, layered films, filamentary structures, and bulk nanostructured materials, observes Koch (North Carolina State U.) are often very different from the macroscale properties of the same substance, a fact which is driving interest in these materials in the field of materials science and engineering. He presents 14 chapters reviewing the synthesis, characterization, and applications of bulk (mainly inorganic) nanostructured materials, with the exception of an article on electronic and optoelectronic materials. The chapters on synthesis address nanostructured particles and films; synthesis by inert-gas condensation methods; thermal sprayed nanostructured coatings; preparation by solid state processing; nanocrystalline powder consolidation methods; electrodeposited nanocristalline metals, alloys, and composites; and computer modeling of nanostructured materials. Under the heading of properties come chapters on diffusion in nanocrystalline materials, nanostructured materials for gas reactive applications, magnetic nanoparticles, magnetic properties of nanocrystalline materials, mechanical behavior of nanocrystalline metals, structure formation and mechanical behavior of two-phase nanostructured materials, and electronic and optoelectronic materials. Applications are discussed within these chapters. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
