Solubility phenomenon are typically considered the purview of the field of chemistry, but in fact they are important to the field of medicine as well, not least because of the their importance to understanding biomineral formulation in body fluids. In this work, which blends the two fields, the editors (both of Murdoch U., Australia) present five chapters that explore normal and pathological biomineralization in humans. The volume begins with an overview of experimental and modeling methods and a description of unusual dissolution and crystallization phenomena involving nano-sized biomaterials. This is followed by a general classification of renal and salivary calculi based on their formation mechanism and a review of the solubilities of calcium and magnesium phosphates, along with their relevance to normal and pathological mineralization. Finally, a discussion of the role of liquid phase precursors in the formation of bone and kidney stones and a consideration of the relation of biomineralization of iron to iron-overload diseases are presented.
