The impetus for this book was an informal workshop held in 2005, at the U. of Cambridge. The conference was titled "Global Science, International Health and the Ethics of Collaborative Practice," and the sponsoring organization was a research group with the acronym PLACEB-O (Partners Linked Across Collaborations in Ethics and the Biosciences--Orbital). Editor Konrad (U. of Cambridge) brought together 12 contributions, including some she invited from scholars who did not attend the workshop. Hers is the first chapter, on new directions in collaborative anthropology. Following are papers on such topics as recent collaborative malaria vaccine trials in The Gambia, organ transplantation in Mongolia, reimagining the classic scene of fieldwork encounter, a Sri Lankan perspective on research ethics and accountability, global health R&D alliances, and collaboration in Southeast Asian studies.
