In this study, Kopley (English, Penn State Commonwealth College) examines some of the literary origins of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter . He begins by discussing Hawthorne's transformation of a passage from Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" into his own description of Chillingworth's intrusion upon the sleeping Dimmesdale. Other sources discussed include James Russell Lowell's 1844 poem "A Legend of Brittany" and Ebenezer Wheelwright's 1842 novel The Salem Belle . Distributed by Associated University Presses.
