This wire-spiral-bound text for an introductory clinical statistics or biostatistics course provides a step-by-step explanation of the role of the biomedical statistician in clinical trials, from protocol writing to data monitoring, group randomization, and ultimately writing a final report to the US Food and Drug Administration (or its European equivalent). Examples use applications in SAS statistical software. Theoretical and applied exercises are provided, with solutions on a web site. The book is for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students who have completed a calculus-based introduction to probability theory and a course in mathematical statistics, and who are also familiar with the basics of regression analysis. In particular, students should be comfortable with the concepts of normal, Poisson, and gamma distributions, and the Central Limit Theorem. In addition, a working knowledge of the multivariate linear and logistic regression models is required. The author is affiliated with California State University-Long Beach.
