This is the third edition of an encyclopedia originally published in 1995 as the Encyclopedia of Drugs and Alcohol and later given the new title in order to include addictive behaviors that do not involve drugs and alcohol. The encyclopedia's four volumes contain 545 alphabetical and cross-referenced entries from "abstinence volition effect," an individual's affective and cognitive reaction following a lapse, to "zero tolerance," government and private employer policies that mandate predetermined consequences or punishments for specific drug and alcohol offenses. Over a fifth of the entries are completely new and over half have been substantially revised and updated in order to take into account emerging issues such as addictive behavior and the Internet; recent discoveries in behavioral neuroscience; the findings of new, large-scale population studies; new developments in the use of medications; et cetera. With the exception of purely scientific issues, the focus of the encyclopedia, in terms of organizations, policies, and social issues, is on addiction in the United States, but a few articles discuss addiction in other world regions or individual countries for comparative purposes. Many of the articles discuss specific substances, while others examine more topical issues such as advertising and the pharmaceutical industry, antisocial personality disorder, US foreign policy and drugs, creativity and drugs, codependence, the genome project, drug and alcohol use in the US military, pregnancy and drug dependence, slang terms in US drug cultures, and welfare policy and substance abuse. Each entry provides a guide to further reading and a comprehensive index is included in the fourth volume. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
