Kovitz (emeritus, psychiatry, Loma Linda U.) applies his ideas concerning anxiety and self-deception to the individual, the nation, and religion. He argues that anxiety results from individuals attempting to shield themselves from painful self- knowledge and criticizes the practice of treating anxiety solely with psychiatric drugs. He then discusses how nations can similarly attempt to hide from themselves the true motives and knowledge of themselves and others, thus exacerbating conflict and social problems. Finally, he addresses religion, arguing that much religious conflict comes not from seeking religious truth but attempting to defend a familiar way of life. He also looks at the life of Saint Teresa of Avila, discussing her anxiety and the therapeutic value of her religious visions. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
