This work explains the molecular basis of signal transduction, regulated gene expression, the cell cycle, tumorigenesis, and apoptosis in humans and animals. It describes the structural and biochemical properties of signaling molecules and their regulation, presents tools used for signal transmission, and explains the organizational principles of signaling pathways. The book concentrates on the best- studied reactions and components of selected signaling pathways, and does not try to describe distinct signaling pathways in a complete way. It is for readers with basic knowledge in biochemistry or molecular biology, and can be used as a reference for students and researchers and as a companion for a course on regulation and signal transduction. This fourth edition contains a new chapter on basics of cell signaling; the chapter on regulation of gene expression now contains more emphasis on chromatin modifications and micro RNAs. Krauss teaches biochemistry at the University of Bayreuth, Germany. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
