First presented at the conference “Periodical Transfers: Eighteenth Century Journals as Agents of Change,” in Oslo, Norway, in June 2013, the 17 essays in this volume examine how periodicals in 18th-century Northern and Western Europe impacted regional developments and the transfer of concepts, values, cultural practices, genres, and texts. History, literature, and other scholars mainly from Scandinavia illustrate how periodicals made the Enlightenment a wide-ranging phenomenon, providing access to the ideas of philosophy, science, and politics, as well as poetry, prose, and drama, and serving as agents of change. They offer case studies that focus on Scandinavia, organized by different types of transfers: international transfers, as periodicals moved across borders; political transfers, emphasizing government attitudes towards writing, selling, and consuming news and opinions, including the role of censorship; theatrical transfers, exploring interactions between stage, society, and the theatricality of texts, genres, and media; and digitization projects that index and publish journals from 18th-century Norway and Germany online.
