This is a story of the after effects of the testimony of one woman, the mother of a boy brutally killed by police in South Africa in 1986. Mrs. Notrose Konile as interviewed by the Truth Commission about her son. In both her native language and the English translation there were statements that didn't seem clear. Colleagues at the University of the Western Cape, Krog, Mpoleni and Ratele, two women, one man, two black one white, set out to examine the testimony and to try to understand through it, the ramifications of what happened. To do this they each had to delve into their own feelings about Apartheid, race, education and the possibility of forgiveness. It is a powerful book, told in four voices, those of the three authors and of Mrs. Konile, who suffered so much.
