Kusz (kinesiology, U. of Rhode Island) sees media representations of white male athletes like Andre Agassi and Lance Armstrong and emerging white dominated sports such as NASCAR as evidence of a cultural "revolt" seeking to reestablish white hegemony by establishing a narrative of "other" whiteness that helps defuse the challenges to white normativity and supremacy in American culture. This cultural revolt is not some conscious plan on the part of white athletes, rather it constituted by and constitutive of a more pervasive white cultural revolt that has been taking place since at least the 1990s.
