Gio Ponti (1891-1979) was one of Italy's most influential designers. This survey of one of Italy's towering modern designers includes automobiles, furniture, interiors, and buildings. This expansive and exhaustively researched monograph is a unique and definitive examination of Italy's most respected twentieth-century design master.
This exhaustive survey of Ponti's career draws on twenty years of research. It presents in full color a wide selection of his oeuvre from his early ceramic work as a design direction for the prestigious Italian porcelain company Richard Ginori to his last and most famous architectural works: the Pirelli Tower in Milan and the Museum of Modern Art in Denver. Also featured are Ponti's automobile designs for Alfa Romeo, interiors for Italian luxury liners, bathroom fixtures for American Standard, the famous Superleggera chair for Cassina, and the Alitalia offices in New York.
His genius knew no bounds, as he worked in a multitude of materials and on a wide variety of projects. However, he brought to each project a combination of elegance and grace that became a hallmark of Italian design, and indeed his work typified the fascination much of the design world had for twentieth-century Italian design.
