Building on the arguments he made in the earlier Is Science Value Free? Values and Scientific Understanding (1994/2004), in which he advanced a theory of science that suggested that the materialist strategies pursued by scientific methodologies are not value free, Lacey (philosophy, Swarthmore College) applies his earlier insights to the controversy over the use of transgenics. He evaluates the arguments for and against transgenics and argues for a "strategic pluralism" that would prioritize the strategic investigation of alternatives, such as agroecology in particular.
