Laist (Gateway Community College, Connecticut) has selected four novels both as representative of DeLillo's four decades of writing, and as evidence to bolster his argument that the author's most conspicuous and consistent theme is the existential interpenetration of the human subject and the technological object. The characters are transcendental poets, he says, who respond to things of the world as participants in deeper meanings rather than as rational automatons. He pairs Americana and inventing the primitive, White Noise and technology with a human face, Underworld and American misshapens, and Cosmopolis and the concept of disappearance.
