Laminack (literacy education, Western Carolina U.) and Wadsworth, a consultant and former elementary teacher, guidance counselor, and principal, show teachers how to use read-alouds to neutralize bullying behaviors, create a sense of community in the classroom, and connect readings to the Common Core Standards/College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards. They describe how to use picture books in conjunction with five layers of developing insight and empathy: discovering how people are more alike than different and developing an awareness of the things that make people human; recognizing that there are differences within humanity; understanding how beliefs, thoughts, and feelings affect how people respond to differences; understanding that differences are neither better nor worse; and accepting responsibility for thoughts, attitudes, and actions. They present a guide for each of the five books within each layer and frameworks for moving through each book, as well as suggestions for building community and extending the thinking between read-aloud experiences. They also include a list of other picture books, a sample anti-bullying contract and letter to parents, and lists of community-building activities. No index is included.
