Navy Commander Neal Olen has finally made it to retirement, a good civilian job at Defense Dynamics, and a marriage on the mend after the strains of long separations while he was at sea or on foreign assignments as an intelligence officer. He is only forty-four and beginning to relax into his new life in Camarillo, California.
Suddenly he is recalled to duty to face navy charges of adultery, "conduct unbecoming an officer," and possibly national security violations. Olen's troubles begin in 1999 when he is recognized as the "navy hero" on whom a fictional character is based in a salacious, tell-all novel. The author, Angela Vance, is a woman with whom Olen had a weekend affair five years earlier while separated from his wife, Yvonne. Information about the nation's reconnaissance satellites somehow found its way into her novel.
With his career and marriage at stake, and confinement in a military prison a possibility, Olen finds himself a pawn of both the novel's author, hoping to hype her book sales, and the navy, eager to make an example of him in its push for "zero tolerance" of sex scandals and to demonstrate its committment to airtight security on intelligence information.
