This volume is a collection of the writings of French born priest John Baptist Salpointe (1825-1898) who came to Arizona in 1859 and eventually became an archbishop. Fascinated by the native culture, he performed the recording duties of an amateur ethnologist. In his vignettes and notes he describes locations, practices, tribal history, folk tales from informants, religious dances, and inter-tribal conflicts, much of this gathered during the tumultuous final years of the frontier. Editorial annotation introduces each piece and end notes further clarify. The talent and specialties of editors Lange, Hieb, and Steele stretch across fields of cultural and religious studies, Southwestern historical studies and research, and comparative historiography.
