This text is a product of a June 2004 forum on urban infrastructure and public service delivery for the urban poor in Asia, held in New Delhi by the Comparative Urban Studies Project of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the National Institute of Urban Affairs of India. Twelve papers by 20 international scholar-practitioners examine the social, economic, and political fragmentation of the Asian city and how the city can be made more inclusive. The text includes case studies of the largest cities in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China (including Hong Kong), Indonesia, and the Philippines, and analyzes how policies and programs can be planned and managed to make infrastructure, housing, and basic services more accessible to the poor and to bring about economic, social, and political integration in the Asian city.
