Economists and philosophers trade ideas on the role of freedom as a normative criterion for appraising alternative states of affairs. Unconstrained production and trade were highly touted as preconditions for economic growth and efficiency by economists of the 19th century, including Marx and Engels, and is still used as a battle cry for advocates of various schemes, but has virtually disappeared from the conceptual framework of most modern economists. The collection covers liberty, rights, and opportunities with such discussions as distributive justice, difficulties of the social choice rule approach to rights, and individual freedom of choice in a social setting.
