For this second edition of an upper-level undergraduate or beginning graduate text, Latish (kinesiology, Pennsylvania State University) has added eight new chapters (mainly on motor disorders), a new reference section with about 700 references, and a more reader-friendly presentation of material with a second color, improved b&w illustrations, and chapter introductions. There are also new chapters on current theories and controversies in the field. Chapters are in sections on cells, connections, structures, and control and coordination. By emphasizing the neurophysiological mechanisms of voluntary movement, the text targets advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students who want to better understand how the brain generates control signals and how the peripheral apparatus executes them. Learning features include six labs, chapter problems, and multiple-choice questions. Each lab is designed as a large research study and takes two to three lab periods to complete. Students need only minimal knowledge of basic physics and calculus. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
