With a scope from the 1850s to the 1970s, this publication covers the photographic history of Minneapolis. There is little text outside of captions and sectional introductions written by Lawton (manager, James K. Hosmer Special Collection Library of the Minneapolis Public Library); instead the focus is on the selected black-and-white photographs. The book is organized into four chronological sections, starting with the rise of the mill city (1850-1899), followed by the new century (1900-1920), the city of contrasts (1921-1946), and finally modern Minneapolis (1947-1970).
