Though scientists have long since stopped considering the many kinds of protozoa that use a flagellum for locomotion as a single group, researchers from Germany, the rest of Europe the US, and Australia offer a multidisciplinary view of the unifying structures, mechanisms, and processes involved in flagellate biology. After a historical review of the study of the microbes from the middle 17th century to the present, chapters look at common aspects such as cytoskeleton, surface structures, and sensory mechanisms. Then they turn to differences in, for example the trophic strategies of free-living and parasitic groups, ecology, and population genetics. In final chapters they consider the occurrence and loss of organelles and other aspects of evolution and phylogeny. They do not cover ciliates. Annotation c.
