After a historical review of the study of the microbes from the middle 17th century to the present, chapters look at common aspects such as cytoskeleton, surface structures, and sensory mechanisms. Then they turn to differences in, for example the trophic strategies of free-living and parasitic groups, ecology, and population genetics.
