This is an anthology of first person narratives describing initial Native encounters with white Europeans around the world. Leavitt, a retired Boston University professor, uses excerpts from autobiographies, novels, journals, and historical documents to reveal the impact European explorers, missionaries, settlers, and soldiers had on traditional societies. Arranged geographically by continent, each section includes an introduction providing historical context as well as a time line of first encounters. The 42 entries contain background and bibliographical information and in some cases, black and white photographs. Accessible to both undergraduate and high school students of history and anthropology, this work will be of interest to educators with a focus on colonialism.
