Part of The Individual in History series of educational resource books, this publication provides materials for teaching high school and perhaps beginning college level students about civil disobedience in American history (inexplicably termed "uncivil disobedience" in the title and nowhere else). Following introductory essays on civil disobedience in American history, the volume focuses on two "defining moments," the civil disobedience of Sam Adams and the Sons of Liberty in pursuit of American independence and the use of violence by Carry Nation and the temperance movement. These sections each include a historical interpretive essay; classroom activities; excerpts and reproductions of primary and secondary sources, including broadsides, cartoons, newspaper articles, and the like; and background materials such as glossary terms, biographies, and short descriptions of key organizations and events. The other two volumes in the series focus on Native American struggles and the environmental movement. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
