Lee (French, Georgetown U.) examines secularism as an idea and an impression as expressed in the novel form. Although secularism as a concept has been a significant preoccupation in European literature for hundreds of years, and yet even now the impression of what it causes, what about it is certain, and what is its potential are in stages of formation in Lee's examples from Stendahl (The Red and the Black), Flaubert (Madame Bovary), Turgenev (A Nest of Gentry), d'Aurevilly (Bewitched) and Dostoevsky (Demons). Lee finds in these examples that God has not abandoned the world in these novels. Instead, God's abandonment is built into and out of the very structure of the novel.
