Leiren (Scandinavian studies and Norwegian studies, U. of Washington) provides translations of six plays by Norwegian playwright Marcus Thrane (1817-1890). A labor leader and agitator, Thrane moved to the US after imprisonment in Norway and wrote and produced plays for Norwegian-American audiences that expressed his cultural and political views. Those included in this volume are An American Servant Girl, The Posting Station in Hallingdal, Who Grinds the Coffee?, The Hypocrites, Holden, and The Power of the Black Book. They are arranged chronologically and date from 1866 to 1884. Leiren also provides an introduction and notes on the plays, which were translated from the manuscripts in the National Library in Oslo.
