Written in a narrative writing style for pre- and in-service K-12 teachers, this work reviews theories of language development with a view toward understanding the impact of language development on pre-academic skills and emergent literacy. Language development is detailed from birth through adolescence. The book is careful to distinguish between cultural language differences and language disorders, with three chapters devoted to bilingual and diverse culture and language: African American English in the classroom, bilingual language acquisition and learning, and bilingual speech sound development and disorders. Chapter-opening case studies illustrate typical and atypical speech and language behaviors. Other learning features include chapter summaries, key words, study questions, projects, and a glossary. The text's two-color layout includes b&w photos. Levey teaches at Lehman College-CUNY. Polirstok is professor of special education at Kean University.
