Global travelers on "postmodern pilgrimages" increasingly seem to be seeking authenticity, but what does that imply for their self- hood and view of other cultures? Influenced by his reading of Edward Said's Orientalism (1978) and residing in Nepal as a student, Levin (English, Clark College, Worcester, Massachusetts) couches themes of such travel narratives through the lenses of classic psychoanalytic cases and terms: obsessive, life-driven, death-driven, or melancholic. For example, he analyzes Paul Theroux's Mosquito Coast (1981), Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild (1997), and Alex Garland's The Beach (1998) as variants of Robinson Crusoe's alienation from British society, obsessive search for authenticity, and ambivalent treatment of the Other (Friday, his servant).
