In this collection of seven articles contributors describe why researchers need to rethink sociocultural theory and examine the issues of identity, agency and power inherent in literacy learning and literacy research. Contributors hold that researchers must make this shift in theory also apply to the ways they produce, represent and disseminate research knowledge. Topics include the need for reframing sociocultural research on literacy, with articles on conceptual frameworks describing the role of critical sociocultural research, the new position of history, and the redesign of histories of participation with literacy education in an adult class. Papers on knowledge and representation describe personal experiences, using transcultural repositioning and rhetorical practice in ethnographic research and learning to treat research sites as transitional spaces.
