Li (law, Utrecht U., the Netherlands) presents a collection of papers resulting from a three-year project of the Chinese-Dutch Research Cooperation on the Legal Aspects of Social Organizations in China, funded by the Royal Dutch Embassy in Beijing from 2001 to 2004. The goal of the project was to get Chinese researchers to examine the current status of social organizations in Europe and to have them critically explore means of creating a legal environment more conducive to the exercise of the right to freedom of association. Six papers from Chinese researchers discuss the model and effects of government administration of social organizations, the dilemma of legitimacy facing China's civil society organizations, China's registration system for social organizations, China's civic environmental protection organizations, and the historical development and current state of legislation on foundations in China. Also included are four comparative papers from European researchers, discussing the state of the law with regards to civil society organizations in the Netherlands, Britain, Germany, and the Netherlands.
