Li and Goldschmidt (professors of Chinese law and human rights law at Utrecht U., the Netherlands) present a collection that incorporates both Chinese and European perspectives on employment discrimination and anti-discrimination labor law in their respective jurisdictions. With the exception of Li's overview of current employment discrimination in China in terms of law and practice, the articles on China are translated from Chinese articles in The Current Situation on Employment Discrimination in China and Ant-discrimination Strategies (China Social Science Press, 2007). They discuss health discrimination, disability discrimination, discrimination against women, household registration and regional origin discrimination, and a survey of employment discrimination in ten major cities. The papers on Europe are based on presentations delivered at the International Conference on Promoting Equal Opportunity in Employment, held in Beijing in 2007. They explore the historical development and main concepts of European Union anti-discrimination law, the law and practice of anti-discrimination law in Austria and the Netherlands, and the role of positive action initiatives in comparative systems of anti-discrimination law and policy.
