Liddle (English, Augsburg College) traces the influence of mid-Victorian journalistic genre forms on contemporary writers of poetry, the novel, and serious expository prose. He applies the genre theories of Mikhail Bakhtin to readings of the Autobiography of Harriet Martineau, Anthony Trollope's analysis of journalistic discourse, the journalism and fictions of George Eliot, and the oppositional relationship between "sensational journalism" and the "sensation novels" of such figures as Wilkie Collins and Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Following these case studies, she turns to issues of theories and method, proposing the Bakhtinian approach as the proper means to bridge the gaps between journalism studies and literary studies.
