Lieberman (criminal justice, U. of Nevada at Las Vegas) and Sales (director of the psychology, policy, and law program at the U. of Arizona) review the most common techniques used by jury selection consultants and critically evaluate them in relation to the relevant social science literature. Following a discussion of the voir dire process, they provide a look at the use of community surveys for obtaining jury pool attitude information. They then discuss jury demographic, personality, and attitudinal factors and assess their relationship to trial outcomes. Later chapters explore in-court procedures for questioning jurors, in-court observations of nonverbal behavior of jurors. They also examine how such trial consultant activities as conducting mock juries, shadow juries, and posttrial interviews can be used to validate and test the community survey and in-court observation methodologies prior and consider potential ethical and professional issues raised by the use of consultants.
