How do Americans of Asian descent differ in their interpretation of the gospel from those who come from, say, Swedish or Scottish roots? Liew (New Testament, Pacific School of Religion) in essence collapses the center in interpretation and moves us to the periphery in his consideration of the ideologies, socio-cultural boundaries and identity formations that inform all interpretation, taking the focus from the European to the Asian within the context of modern America. He locates the central principles of Asian American biblical hermeneutics and their attendant dilemmas, the processes of consent and descent within St. John's inclusiveness, the work of reading and interpreting in (and for) Chinese America, applying the concept of disapora and immigration, and dealing with poetics, politics and endless paradoxes. The chapter with Kyung's Dictee as theme is particularly good. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
