This analysis of Chinese Internet usage, conducted as part of the author's postdoctoral research at the U. of Oslo, Norway, focuses on the micro-level analysis of the experiences of individual users, particularly that of the cohort of urban 10- to 30-year-olds who are the main group of Internet users in China, and how those experiences are interacting with the wider social and cultural fabric of Chinese society. The two main themes of the analysis are young people's perceptions and experiences of the Internet and their online self-representation. Qualitative data collection was organized around the topics of urban youth's "I-and-the Internet" narratives, urban youth and the Net café, youth's online community building, and youth's negotiations of a political self using the Internet.
