German Islamic scholar Loimeier has published extensively on Muslim societies in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Senegal, Nigeria, and Tanzania. Here he reports on his part of the University of Bayreuth research project Islamic Education in East Africa Between Local and Global Influences, itself part of an even larger German research project on Africa under global influences. He begins with a historical survey of the island off the east coast of Africa from the arrival of Islam through colonization and the 1964 revolution to the present. Next he describes the negotiation of Islamic reform in the region. Only after setting that context does he narrow his view to education, looking at the development of the canon, the politics of education in the colonial period, the Muslim Academy, and the politics of Islamic education in revolutionary Zanzibar.
