The essays collected here summarize the experiences, insights, and recommendations of participants involved in a May 2008 symposium hosted by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement at Tufts University. Some essays from outside of the symposium are also included. Contributors are professors and program directors at 13 colleges and universities, as well as leaders of several national and state nonprofit organizations involved in efforts to enhance youth leadership. They address the idea of leadership education through civic engagement and describe some of the best leadership education programs around the country at the college and university level. They demonstrate that a new definition of leadership is not only a set of programs; it is an ethos that should extend across disciplines and departments. Longo teaches global studies and public and community service studies at Providence College. Gibson is vice president of The Philanthropic Initiative.
